Our Lyon adventure begins

Although somewhat strange writing something when you have little or no idea who, if anyone, will read it, here is the first instalment of a blog we intend to post every couple of weeks for the next year or so.

Gill and I arrived in Lyon at the end of May 2013 from Paris and, after three weeks in our caravan, we moved into quite a large apartment in what is known as the Old Lyon (the medieval part just to the west of the Saone, one of the city's two rivers). It is the city's main tourist area and is, thus, extremely lively with its restaurants, bars and clubs everywhere. Not just the daytime either! Our local karaoke club (next door) and the pub the other side of it close at 4am. The road is narrow and cobbled and sound echoes!! The dustbin lorries arrive at 6am and are not terribly quiet on the cobbles! Having said that, we are steadily adjusting to the noise and are reasonably confident we will be able to find a little sleep at night sometime in the next few months. Bear with me; I have a problem with exaggeration sometimes!

Parking the car is equally challenging given that we live in a pedestrian zone!

This is the view of the city from the top of the hill behind our apartment. A stiff 15 minute climb to get up

Here is Le Palais de Justice at night with the Basilique on the hill behind. Our apartment is in the street to the right of the Palais

One of the many flights of stone steps leading up the hill. This one has only 250 steps.

Nevertheless we are quite sure this is where God wants us to start our life in Lyon and we have already met most of our neighbours all of whom are very friendly. We have, in fact, offices on the floors below and above us and therefore, singing etc will not cause anyone a problem. That is something we really prayed for. God is so good!

We have moved here, of course, to start a new church. Two families and one single girl from our old Paris church have also now all moved and, therefore, with a few local contacts we have made, we will be able to start to do a number of things together as a church planting team from this week onwards.

I will be teaching English in loal companies via the Chamber of Commerce (probably between 1-3 days a week).

We will post a new entry on this blog in the next week or two. Happy reading for now!

  2. Hi George & Gill,
Thank you so much for sharing your latest news with us. This is most interesting. Perhaps we'll make our way in your direction sometime. It's not that far from Coventry - by Russian or Chinese standards. :-) Let's keep in touch.

  5. Hi Both, Thanks again for taking the time to share; I don't quite know what to believe with your first blog (!) but hey you're on a new adventure, you sound happy and God's in charge.

  6. That's very interesting indeed. I asked Dave Holden at the last France day if there were any plans for Lyon, and there were none then that he could share, and now here it is! My family and I are not quite ready for the big move to France (much prayer and revelation still needed re timing, location etc) but I'll be following your blog very closely. Exciting times! Pauline

  7. Sounds great George and Gill. Delighted to hear you've found a great "strategic" place... I pray you will be able to get some sleep :).

Will be praying for many to find you, and thru you to know Him. Acts 18:10 - He has many people in that city. Go for it.

    Happy pioneering :).
